What Psychotherapy is and why talking helps

Psychotherapy explores both the difficulties you are experiencing and the underlying patterns that may contribute to them.

It is not only about what you are struggling with, but also why.

A confidential therapeutic relationship provides a space to express yourself openly, without judgement.

Through talking, you can develop greater clarity

Psychotherapy explores both the difficulties you are experiencing and the underlying patterns that may contribute to them.

It is not only about what you are struggling with, but also why.

A confidential therapeutic relationship provides a space to express yourself openly, without judgement.

Through talking, you can develop greater clarity and understanding of your emotional experiences, relationships and the challenges you face in the present.

Exploring how your current experiences may be connected to the past can help you recognise patterns of thinking, feeling and relating that were shaped by earlier experiences.

Understanding how you have learned to cope with challenge or adversity can also reveal ways of responding that may once have been helpful but are now limiting.

With greater awareness, new possibilities for change can emerge. You can begin to develop ways of responding that feel more authentic and better suited to who you are now.

Over time, this deeper understanding can strengthen your sense of self and help you recognise challenges to your emotional wellbeing and relationships more clearly.

Psychotherapy can create an opportunity for psychological growth and meaningful change, supporting you to make choices that are more aligned with a life that feels meaningful, stable and fulfilling.

  • Irritability and low mood
  • Grief following the end of a relationship
  • Conflict or volatility in personal relationships
  • Difficulty identifying and expressing your needs
  • Stress and burnout
  • Significant life transitions, including parenthood, marriage, menopause and bereavement

Starting therapy is an important step towards self-care and improved wellbeing.

The therapeutic relationship is central to this process, and it is important that you feel a sense of trust, openness and safety.

We would begin with an initial consultation. This is a conversation and an opportunity for you to talk about what you are experiencing, the difficulties you are facing and what has led you to seek therapy at this point in your life.

It can be helpful to reflect on your experiences beforehand, but you do not need to have everything figured out. Together, we can explore your current circumstances and begin to understand what may be contributing to the difficulties you are experiencing.

Past experiences may naturally come to mind, and we can consider these together in relation to what you are experiencing in the present.

I will work closely with you to develop a shared understanding of what you would like to achieve through therapy and the purpose of our work together.

Both short-term and open-ended psychotherapy focus closely on your current relationships, emotional life and what emerges in the here and now of the therapeutic relationship.

Short-term psychotherapy is time-limited to four months. The work is more structured, with a focus on an agreed central issue and the aim of creating meaningful change within this area. The defined timeframe can provide a sense of focus and containment, particularly if you are new to therapy or seeking help with a specific and more recent difficulty.

Open-ended psychotherapy offers longer-term, more flexible and exploratory work. It provides greater opportunity to deepen your understanding of yourself, your relationships and patterns of relating, allowing the work to develop as new themes and experiences emerge.

The initial consultation provides an opportunity to experience the psychodynamic approach and to think together about whether this type of psychotherapy feels appropriate for you at this time, and whether a short-term or open-ended approach would best support the work.

Weekly sessions

Weekly sessions are 50 minutes and take place in person at the same time and location each week. Online sessions can be arranged where attending in person is not possible, by prior agreement.

To give therapy the best opportunity to develop, it is important to engage with the regular weekly rhythm of sessions.

Fee

The fee for the initial consultation is £90.
Ongoing weekly sessions are also £90.
